England: Haigh Family--Adelaide with Caton, Hedley and Ernest (1863)

Figure 1.-- Adelaide with Caton, Hedley and Ernest Haigh photographed in 1863 by Warner Gothard & Co of Grimsby, presumably in the grounds of Grainsby Hall. I assume that Adelaide is the familiar name of Emma Jane Adelaide Harty--like many families, the order of the given christian names seems to be irrelevant.

Here we see Adelaide with Caton, Hedley and Ernest Haigh photographed in 1863 by Warner Gothard & Co of Grimsby, presumably in the grounds of Grainsby Hall. I assume that Adelaide is the familiar name of Emma Jane Haigh. Some of the other portraits are annotated A.E.J. Haigh. A family member tells us, " Something I know for certain was that Adelaide was Emma Jane Adelaide Harty, Daughter of Sir Robert Way Harty, an Irish baronet. The little girl was Adela Gwendoline Hilda. Ernest was Marcus Harty Ernest in full." In many of these portraits we note an inscription that looks like "Castor". Apparently that was Caston. His full name was Charles Henry Caton. Like many families, the order of the given christian names seems to be irrelevant. Usage varied from time to time. A family member writes, "Your remark on the way Victorians didn't seem to worry much over the order of names is important. That phenomenon was true with my branch of the Haighs also. My grandfather for instance was variously Charles Edward Claude or Edward Charles Claude or Charles Claude Edward. Despite that, he was always 'Pip' to the family! It wasn't till relatively recently that I found out his full names. Both Caton and Hedley are dressed in matching jacket and skirt outfits. Ernest is still an infant. Individual portraits were also taken of Cator and Hedley.
