Jonathan: Bed Time

Figure 1.--Here we are in our pajamas getting ready for bed in the evening. That is a map of London on the wall. it was a great map too. I still had it on the wall in Belgium, and I'm hoping to find it again on day. I bet it's up at mum and dad's in a box somewhere.

Getting us all to bed in the evening was another big operation. We all went to bed when we were told too. The three youngest had one bedtime, and my eldest brother had a later bedtime. There were four of us in one room. We originially had two double beds for the four of us, then mum bought bunk beds but she found them tricky when 'making the beds' each day, so they were placed alongside each other as four single beds across the room. Here we are in our pajamas getting ready for bed in the evening. That is a map of London on the wall. As little guys the cramped quarters were not a problem. As we got older the accomodations got a little cramped. We all had similar pajamas. There was no central heating, no double glazing. We woke up in the mornings to Jack Frost on the windows (that's ice on the INSIDE of the windows!) We had paraffin heaters in the bedroom (I think you call that kerosene in the States) which produced a very pretty pattern on the ceiling! But dad usually came in and turned them off after we'd gone to sleep. I think he was concerned that one of us might knock it over in the night. Which meant that it could be really cold when we woke up in the morning.

Bath Time

Bathtime was Saturday evenings, the three youngest together, then down to the front room to watch telly, get dried and ready for bed. I was about 10 or 11 probably when we started having our own baths, or maybe 2 together, mainly because it was getting a bit crowded in there. However, there was one last communal bathtime, when I was 12 because we were going away the next morning and there wasn't time for separate baths. There was no embarrassment obviously, it was just a pain trying to have a bath with 2 brothers and so little room.

Bed Time

Getting us all to bed in the evening was another big operation. We all went to bed when we were told too. The three youngest had one bedtime, and my eldest brother had a later bedtime. Here we are in our pajamas getting ready for bed in the evening.

Our Room

There were four of us in one room. We originially had two double beds for the four of us, then mum bought bunk beds but she found them tricky when 'making the beds' each day, so they were placed alongside each other as four single beds across the room. That is a map of London on the wall. As little guys the cramped quarters were not a problem. As we got older the accomodations got a little cramped.

Pajamas

We all had similarpajamas. We also had flannel pajamas. Here we have an image of bedtime 1960s style! We wore shirts under our pajamas as it was a little chilly in the Winter. Note we all got different ptterns, but the same styles. Nowadays pyjamas are more like tracksuits, although as boys get older most don't wear pyjamas any more and just sleep in their underwear. It must have been winter for us to be wearing shirts under them.

Prayers

Mum said grace for us before meals, but at bedtime she would soetimes remind us to pray, or we'd remind each other. This reminding became a nightly routine which got shortened to one of us saying "DFTP"! (Don't forget to pray!) It was a sort of game each night to be the one who remembered to say it first.

Heating

There was no central heating, no double glazing. We woke up in the mornings to Jack Frost on the windows (that's ice on the INSIDE of the windows!) We had paraffin heaters in the bedroom (I think you call that kerosene in the States) which produced a very pretty pattern on the ceiling! But dad usually came in and turned them off after we'd gone to sleep. I think he was concerned that one of us might knock it over in the night. Which meant that it could be really cold when we woke up in the morning.
