Germany: Child Care Instutions

Figure 1.--We note large numbers of photographs in the 1920s-50s of German children at vacation group homes. They were often school groups supervised by their teachers. Here is a group involved in games, probably in the early 20s. They appear to be in a forested area.

We note large numbers of photographs in the 1920s-50s of German children at vacation group homes. They were often school groups supervised by their teachers. Here is a group involved in games, probably in the early 20s. They appear to be in a forested area. A British reader writes, "Looking at the above referenced photo of the school party palying on vacation. There are two features. The race is about to start and one boy, furthest from the camera has 'jumped the gun.' You see his hands on the start line, but his moving body is a ghost, due to the slow shutter speed. The boys in the next row appear to be preparing for a sack race. I thought this was a uniquely British thing, like the three legged and egg and spoon races, performed at school fete days to amuse, rather than as an athletic challenge. Thinking back to my preteen years in America I don't recall such events, but it is a long time ago." Sack races and egg and sppon races were popular featurs in America as well. I am uncertain aboutvtheir origins, but despite the often acrimonious 19th century relationship between america an Britain, the United Stayesas very much culturally tied to Britain. Incidentally we aldo note egg and spoon and three-legged races in Germany during this period.
