German Boys' Clothes: Regional Differences--Baden

Figure 1.--This farmer is harbesting beets in 1934. The family reportedly lived in Darnstadt near Ulm, but a German reader tells us that this does not sound quite right. The image is identified as Baden-Wurtenburg which is a modern entity.

Baden was a Grand Duchy in the German Empire. It is located in the west along the Rhine River facing Alscace. It is bownded on the north by Bavaria and Hesse; on the west by the Rhine which separates it from the Palatine and France; on the south by Switzerland; and the east by Wurtenburg. HBC has some information on the royal family. Baden is best known for the Black forest. Some information is available on folk costumes. A German reader tells us, "There are some geographical problems with the caption here (figure 1). The situation of Baden is correct. However, Darmstadt is a city in Hessen, near to Frankfurt, about 20 miles to its south (where I am living). Darmstadt is about 40 miles to the north of the border of Baden/Hessen (which is near Heidelberg/Mannheim). Ulm is about 150 miles away, at the Württemberg/Bavaria border in the east. Since about 1955 there is a German state, Baden-Württemberg, correct; however, I suppose the photo is of an earlier time (you wrote 1934)." Part of the problem here is that the Germans keep moving their borders. The borders of the various states making up German changed dramtically in historical period. Even in more recennt times when the birders are more of an administrative issue, there have been changes. Also of course the source could have been in error. Based on what our reader tells us, this scene may have beem more likely in Württemberg thanb Baden.
