Dutch Boys' Clothes: Jackets

Figure 1.--Jackets in the Post World War II era became very popular garments. This boy wears a suede jacket from a 1967 catalog. The style looks very American.

Jackets like sweaters are important garments for Dutch boys who often have to contend with chilly weather. The modern jacket, however is a relatively recent development. This is in part because most Dutch boys until the post-World War II era did not have extensive wardrobes to include specialty garments like jackets. I do not note Dutch boys wearing commonly wearing jackets other than suit jackets before the War. They did commonly wear sweaters, but I have not noted jackets. The World War II military uniforms appear to have been an influence here. American aviator jackets, for example, were a popular style in the 1950s. By the 1960s these informal jackets appear much more common. In our modern era almost all Dutch boys have jackets of a wide variety of discriptions. Many of the jackets appear to be quite similar to the styles American boys also wore after the War. This appears to be less so in some other European countries like France and England.

Chronology

The modern jacket, however is a relatively recent development. This is in part because most Dutch boys until the post-World War II era did not have extensive wardrobes to include specialty garments like jackets. I do not note Dutch boys wearing commonly wearing jackets other than suit jackets before the War. They did commonly wear sweaters, but I have not noted jackets. By the 1960s these informal jackets appear much more common. In our modern era almost all Dutch boys have jackets of a wide variety of discriptions.

Influences

Many of the jackets appear to be quite similar to the styles American boys also wore after the War. This appears to be less so in some other European countries like France and England.

Types

HBC has noted several different types of boys jackets. The jacket is quite a flexible garmentband the possible variations are virtually endless.

Suede

Suede jackets were popular with boys, although HBC has always considered it more of a style for an older boys. The sude was usually a natural color although some were dyed muted colors. One type od sude jacket had knitted sleeves. Colars varied. Most of these jackets had zipper closures. This one looks very much like the jackets worn in America. They were warm and perfect for cool autumn weather. Maintaing the swede, however, was difficult as it could not be machine washed. Thus it had some disadvantages for the younger boy.

Poplin

Poplin jackets were popuar light jackets because they were so easy to care for. Poplin was a corded fabric. It could be made out of different materials. Cotton was often used for boys wearm but in the 1960s bleded fabric with part polyester appeared making the jackets even easier to care for. They were available in many different colors, including broght colors. Khaki was popukar in America, but I'm not sure about the Netherlands.

Sweaters

While casaual jackets were not common before World War II, sweaters were. The Dutch winters can be quite cold. There are also a lot of chilly spring and autumn days, located as the Dutch are on the North Sea. Thus sweaters have proven to be very popular garments in the Netherlands. I'm not sure when Dutch boys began wearing sweaters, but they are clearly being comnonly worn by the 1920s (surely appearing much earlier). They are still very popular today. HBC still has, however, relatively little information on sweater styles and patterns.
