Dutch Boys' Clothes: Shirt Types

Figure 1.--.

There are many different styles of shirts, but three basic types of shirts, shirtwaists, collared, and collarless shirts. Shirtwaists were late 19th century shirts without collars, but made to be worn with detacable collars The collared shirts are the more formal ones and of course have been worn with many different collar styles. Sone were made in casual styles--like polo shirts. The best known collarless shirts are "T" shirts. They are best known as a style worn after World War II (1939-45), but HBC has noted "T"-shirt like in the 1930s.

Shirtwaists

Shirtwaists were late 19th century shirts without collars, but made to be worn with detacable collars.

Collared Shirts

The collared shirts are the more formal ones and of course have been worn with many different collar styles. Sone were made in casual styles--like polo shirts. After World War II we note Dutch boys in the 1950s wearing brightly colored shirts. Plaids were popular, We even note boys wearing brightly colored floral shirts, rather like Haiwanian shirts. We have not noted these shirts being worn in other European countries. One style we note that was populkar in the mid- and late-12950s was a shirt without the normal neck opening, nit rather that butoned straight across the throat. I believe these were called Chinese collars in the United States, I'm not sure what they were called in the Netherlands.

Collarles Shirts

The best known collarless shirts are "T"-shirts. They are best known as a style worn after World War II (1939-45), but HBC has noted "T"-shirt like in the 1930s. These were generally solid colored shirts. After World War II, brightly colored stripped "T"-shirts appeared. We have noted some with side "v"s, raher like Polo shirts. I do not recall this with American "T"-shirts in the 1940s-60s. Other than this they look very similar to the "T"-shirts worn by American boys. I'm not sure yet just whay age boy ore these "T"-shirts. Until th 1970, however, they appear to have neen an excluivly boys' style.
