Dutch Boys' Clothes: Shirt Types--Chinese Collars

Figure 1.--Here we see some of the boys in a Dutch school class during 1957. Several boys were wearing shirts with the Chinese collar.

One style we note that was populkar in the mid- and late-1950s was a shirt without the normal neck opening, nit rather that butoned straight across the throat. I believe these were called Chinese collars in the United States, I'm not sure what they were called in the Netherlands. The style in the United States was of limited popularity. Here we note about five boys in a 1957 class photo wearing this style of collar. This suggests considerable popularity. The Dutch Chinese collar shirts seem done in particularly bright patterns.
