Dutch School Uniform Chronology: The 1950s--State Schools

Figure 1.--This is a Dutch school class in 1957. Note all the different shirts, including a "T" shirt. Also notice the shiers that button across the throat. We also notice this style in America. It was called a Chinese collar. Almost all of the boys wear casual shirts, but one boy wears a white shirt and tie. The boys wear both long pants and short pants with ankle socks. The boys look to be about 11 years old. Click on the image to see the rest of the class.

We have very little information on Dutch school clothes during the 1950s. Dutch schools did not have uniforms, except pperhaps for a few private schools. Dutch primary boys commonly wore short pants to school through the 1950s, often with knit sweaters. A classroom photo of what looks like a state primary school shows most of the boys wearing short pants with both kneesocks and ankle socks. This looks to be a state school. Graually during the 1950s boys began wearing shorter shorts and few older boys wore them. Another photograph taken in 1957 shows boys wearing a wide variety of mostly colored shirts with both short and long pants. The boys all wear ankle socks, but some boys probably wore kneesocks in collor weather. We have no information on secondary schools at this time. Presumably the boys there would have worn long pants, but some of the younger boys may have worn shorts.
