Dutch School Uniform:  Chronology--The 1950s

Figure 1.--This is a Dutch school group photographed in Amsterdam in 1956. We have no information about the school, but it looks to us like a private school.

We have very little information on Dutch school clothes during the 1950s. Dutch schools did not have uniforms, except pperhaps for a few private schools. We have, howwever, no information on such schools at this time. Dutch primary boys commonly wore short pants to school through the 1950s, often with knit sweaters. A classroom photo of what looks like a state primary school shows most of the boys wearing short pants with both kneesocks and ankle socks. This looks to be a state school. Graually during the 1950s boys began wearing shorter shorts and few older boys wore them. We notice another photograph of boys wearing overcoats and suits, mostly long pants suits, in 1956 (figure 1). This looks to be a private school. One boy looks to be wearing a school cap. We are unsure if it is a school cap, or just a school-style cap purchased by his mother. It appears to have a school badge on it, but the other boys are not wearing caps.

State Schools

We have very little information on Dutch school clothes during the 1950s. Dutch schools did not have uniforms, except pperhaps for a few private schools. A classroom photo of what looks like a state primary school shows most of the boys wearing short pants with both kneesocks and ankle socks. This looks to be a state school. Graually during the 1950s boys began wearing shorter shorts and few older boys wore them. Another photograph taken in 1957 shows boys wearing a wide variety of mostly colored shirts with both short and long pants. The boys all wear ankle socks, but some boys probably wore kneesocks in collor weather. We have no information on secondary schools at this time. Presumably the boys there would have worn long pants, but some of the younger boys may have worn shorts.

Private Schools

We have no information on Dutch private schools at this time. We notice a photograph of boys wearing overcoats and suits, mostly long pants suits, in 1956 (figure 1). This looks to be a private school. One boy looks to be wearing a school cap. We are unsure if it is a school cap, or just a school-style cap purchased by his mother.
