Collars on Boys' Shirts: Chinese Collars

Chinese collar
Figure 1.--I remember a shirt style that was briefly popular in the late 1950s called at the time a 'Chinese collar'. We are not positive that this was the name for it. Here we see a high school boy wearing a plaid one.

We remember a shirt style that was briefly popular in the late 1950s called at the time a 'Chinese collar'. This should not be confused with the Mao collar which was an etirely fifferent collar. We are nI'm not positive that this was the name for it. The shirt has only two buttons, one on either side of the collar. The opening for the head goes horizontally across the front. I remember seeing a few boys wearing it t the time, but didn't like it myself. You can see these shirts in schools photographs at the time. I'm not sure if it was worn in primary school. I was in high school at the time. I'm not sure what other countries these shorts were worn in, but we do note them in the Netherlands and Sweden. A reader writes, "Looks the same as the shirts worn in Europe from the Netherlands northward from the mid-50s to the early-60s." Another reader writes, "This was a style that was somewhat popular in California during the 1956-57 school year. My Junior high school album shows a number of boys wearing this style of shirt in early 1957. Although I wasn't particularly fond of the style, I seem to remember getting a dark brown shirt like this as a Christmas present (probably Christmas 1956) from my grandmother." I'm not sure what the term was used for these shirts in different countries.
