Czech Boy (1955)

Figure 1.--This Czech boy seems to have sent this portrait of himself as a vacation memo, although it was sent in December 1955. The shirt has a uniform look to it such as flap pockers. We wonder if it was a Young Pioneer or school shirt.

This Czech boy seems to have sent this portrait of himself as a vacation memo, although it was sent in December 1955. The shirt has a uniform look to it such as flap pockers. We wonder if it was a Young Pioneer or school shirt. A reader writes, "I have a little more information than I usually do when I send you something. You're such a great detective about sorting out these things, you might enjoy this. The photo came from a seller in Germany (figure 1), but the writing on the back really doesn't look German to me. I assume it is from 1955, which interests me, because I thought the wearing of short pants and knee socks for boys this age was beginning to phase out. This really doesn't look like either a formal outfit, or informal. It looks too dressy for play clothes, but not totally dress up, due to lack of a tie. Any clues to the actual ethnicity? It almost appears that this boy's parents wanted a formal portrait, and sort of pieced together as good an outfit as they could. It obviously isn't a formal short pants suit, but could it be a sort of uniform for a boys group that this lad might have been involved with? Lack of emblems on the shirt say probably not, but it does sort of have the look of a German Youth uniform from the past." A message on the back reads, "foto: 11cérvence 55. Svému Lolínkovi na pamálku z letních prázdnin 55. 12leby Jenda." A German reader tells us, "The writing appears to be Czech. Several words matched with the dictionary: 11.July.1955 to remember vacation." A HBC reader writes, "Note how high up the boy wears his trousers." This is higher than usual for the time, but boys tend to wear their pants much higher than boys do at the turn of the 21st century where the trends appears to wears pants as low as physically possible.
