Scandinavian Boy: Italian Vacation (1952)

Figure 1.--The earlist photographs we have are of the family on a vacation in Italy. The photographs were taken in Venice. Traveling at the time was not as common as it is today. We suspect that the family was comfortably situated. The boy wears a kind of military cap. I assume it was a Norwegian or Swedish army cap. The cap seems a bit out of place with a tie and double-breasted blazer which he wears with what look like khaki short pants and knee socks. Boys in the background, presumably Italian boys, wear both short pants and knickers.

It is rather probably a favorite item he insisted on wearing. Some mothers are more tolerant than others about such maters. As with most children, he had fun feeding the pigenos. I'm not sure what the book was he is holding. A reader writes, "I suggest the book, by its size, is most likely an Italian language phrase book, or a pocket dictionary. I used to take dictionaries of this size to Europe in the 1950s."
