Scandinavian Boy (1952-53)

Figure 1.--The earlist photographs we have are of the family on a vacation in Italy. The photographs were taken in Venice. Traveling at the time was not as common as it is today. We suspect that the family was comfortably situated. The boy wears a kind of military cap. I assume it was a Norwegian or Swedish army cap. The cap seems a bit out of place with a tie and double-breasted blazer which he wears with what look like khaki short pants and knee socks.

A HBC reader has sent us a set of photographs of a boy in Norway, Sweden, and on vacation in other European countries. We are not sure though if he is Norwegian or Swedish. Many of the available photographs were taken in Norway. The images do, however, provide some glimpses of a Scandinavian boy and his family in the early 1950s. The photographs were talen in 1952 and 53. The family is camping in Norways and Itly. This travel suggests that the family was comfortably fixed. There is a bicycle race in Sweden. The boy wears a military-stle cap and a beret. The pictures look to be taken during the summer and the boy wears short pants with ankle sicks and knee socks. We're not sure how he dressed during the winter. Perhaps our Scandinavian readers will have some insights to offer here.

Italy (1952)

The earlist photographs we have are of the family on a vacation in Italy. As with most children, he had fun feed ing the pigenos.

Norwegian Camping (1953)

We note the family the following year camping in Norway. They seem to have stayed in rustic cabins and gone for hikes in the coubtryside. There were also picnics and camp fires. The boy wears a beret, a kind of track suit, and sandals in a camp fire scene with his parents.

Norwegian Boat Ride (1953)

We note the family on a boat. Perhaps this is how they traveled to to the camp they stayed at. We notice the same boys on the boat that were swimming together at camp. We are not sure just where this boat ride ocucurred. It looks to us like a lake boat ride rather than an ocean going ship that went up the coast. The boy wears a long-sleeve shirt with khaki shorts and stripped ankle socks. Note his wrist watch.

Norwegian Store (1953)

Here we see the boy at a Norwegian store. It seems to be some kind of tourist shop , bsed on the trinkets for sale in the window, This was probably located in the town where the boat was based. Note the tinkets have a saafaring character. The voy wears a v-neck sweater, khaki shorts, striped ankle socks, and closed-toe sandals. He is posing with a stiffed polar bear. I don't think, however, that Morway had polar bears.

Swedish Bicycle Race (1953)

Here we have a scene from Sweden. We don't know what city. It looks like a bicycle race being staged for younger children. We know nothing about the race. We notice "BC" on the helnets. Could that be the Swedish form of Bike Derby. The event pictired here looks like one for younger children who have just had their traing wheels removed. The children in the race wear casual clothes, both short and long pants. It seems quite a large event. The spectators are dressed more formally.
