Swedish Folk Costumes: Peasant Styles

Swedish folk dress

Figure 1.--This Autochrome color photograph was taken in 1910. It was taken near near Gagnef, Sweden, a small town in central Sweden.. It shows a mother and daughter in traditional clothes. We are not sure if they dressed upn for the ohiotiograph or these were syles commonly worn. The photographer was French banker Albert Kahn. Shortly after the develoopment of Autochrome, a color photograophic process, launched a project to visually document every culture on the globe--the Archive of the Planet. He not only took photographs himsel, but used his personal fortune to hire a team of photographers for the project.

We are not sure how prevaslebnt these folk styles were. The fancy outfit like the little girl on the previous page is wearing was clearly for special occassions. But there were also more utilitarian folk styles. And we are nit sure how common they were. They would have been wirn mistly in rural areas. Here we see a more practical outfits worn by a mkither abd daughters in a small Sweduish town. After World War II such outfits disappeared except for special occassions. But beore the War they apear to have been worn to some extrent. We are not sure how commmn this was or the chronological trends. .
