New Zealand School Types: State Secondary Boys School

Many boys at the school still ride their bikes to school--a New Zealand tradition. At many New Zealand high schools, however, bikes are rapidly being replaced by cars as in the United States. 

New Zealand primary schools are coeducational. The secondary system is more varied. Boys education, especially secondary education, was considered much more important than girls education in the 19th century. Some of the most traditional New Zealand state secondary are the single gender schools. Most early secondary schools in New Zealand were established a single gender schools. Gender separation was considered appropriate at the secondary level. After World War II attitudes had changed. Almost all new secondary schools were opened as coed schools. Today in New Zealand coed schools outnumber the single gender schools. Most large New Zealand cities, however, have single gender schools, giving parents a choice as to their child's education.

A seemingly endless debate has been persued on the benefits of single gender and coeducational schools. There are indeed bebefits and disadvantages to both. There are teenagers who will do better in a single gender setting than coeducational setting. The single gender schools remove some of the distractions of coeducational schools. The availability of both types of schools in New Zealand enble parents to assess the proper education environment for their child.

Representative Schools

These brief descriptions provide a general idea about the size and nature of New Zealand girls secondary schools.

Kelston Boys High School

The School is the only state, single-sex, boys school in West Auckland and is just over 40 years old with a roll currently of approximately 1200 students. It has built a proud tradition over the years offering an all round education with the primary goal being to assist each student to reach his academic potential. The School offers a traditional curriculum of nationally and internationally recognised subjects together with a local curriculum, which caters for the special characteristics of the School's community. Broad ranges of assessment methods are used and our students are tested against the best in the country by their entry in national examinations. Classes are streamed according to ability, the most able accelerated and special courses are offered to those with special need
