Belgian Woman's Magazine: Satin Blouse and Shorts, 1952

Figure 1.--"Vrouw en Huis" in 1952 offered a pattern for a satin blouse with a Peter Pan collar and partial smocking accross the front. It was worn with darker shorts also made out of satin for special occassions. .

Magazine

The Belgian magazine Vrouw en Huis ("Woman and Home") was an important source of fashion information for Belgian and Dutch mothers. We have some issues from the early 1950s. It was a weekly magazine and as it was in Dutch for Flemish readers, was also sold in the Netherlands. I'm not sure how popular it was among French readers.

Garment

Vrouw en Huis in 1952 offered pattern 7306 for a front-buttoning satin blouse with a small Peter Pan collar and partial smocking accross the front. The short sleeves were plain with a narrow cuff. It was worn with darker belted shorts also made out of satin for special occassions. The shorts were plain and apparently without pockets. The belt was a contrasting color and quite narrow. The outfit was for a 4-5 year old boy. It is shown as being worn with strap shoes and white ankle socks. The baloon with the illustration seems to suggest that the suit might be worn to a party, perhaps a birthday party which was still seen as a dress-up occassion.

Styling

Note that the blouse pictured here did not have puff sleeves. Young boys did wear some garments with puffed sleeves, rompers and blouses, at least in France. We ave noted the puffed-sleeve style on various French boy's outfit in the 1940s. It was also used in France on boys' rompers into the late 1950s. We are not sure about Belgium, especially Dutch-speaking Flanders.
