Unidentified Mail Order Catalogs: Suits (England, 1969)

Figure 1.--This suit was described as a "Smart looking suit." It was the suit on this page offered for the older boys and done with long pants. It was lovat and done with a muted pattern.

Here we see a variety of single and double-breasted suits offered in 1969 with both long and short pants. The were available in several different fabrics and colors. We do not know the name of the catalog. Hopefully some of our British readers will recognize the catalog. It was cearly a large one, over 400 pages. The sizes are explained in inches so we are not entirely sure about the age ranges. The suits here do not look like they would have been used as school suits. We have not notice grey or blue school suits or double-breasted school suits. The jacket with a flap pocket also does not look like a school suit.

Suits Offered

Here we see a variety of single and double-breasted suits offered in 1969 with both long and short pants. The were available in several different fabrics and colors. The sizes are explained in inches so we are not entirely sure about the age ranges. The suits here do not look like they would have been used as school suits. D. Smart Looking Suit

The ad copy read, "A smart looking Suit cut from a material with a minimum content of 67% Terylene, with Sarille (Rayon Crimped fibre). Stylish features include lower slant pockets with flaps, button-3 fastening. Melton undercollar. Trousers have suede-look olastic belt, hip pockets and plain bottoms. Colour: Bronze. Suit chest:
27, 28, 29, 30 ins 1K.233F £ 7/15/0 20 wks 7/9
31, 32 ins 1K2034C £ 7/15/0 20 wks 8/3." Terylene was a popular fabric at the time. School shorts were commonly done in Terylne. Unlike flanne, it kept the crease very well. The brown pattern and gold handkerchief are indicators that this was not a school suit.

E. Two-piece Blazer Suit

The ad copy read, "Two=piece Blazer Suit. Cut from sound quality blended Woolen Flannel reinforced with 5% Nylon. Double-breasted unlined jacket fetures single-breasted lapels, taped seams, lined sleeves, three patch pockets and an attractive badge. The shorts are fully lined and have belt loops, inside buttons and double seat. Colour: Navy.
Suit Chest:
23, 23½, 24 ins. 1K2066R.............. £59/6 20 wks 3/- 25, 26, 27, 28 ins. 1K.2067M ............. £67/6 20 wks 3/5." This almost looks like a school suit, although it was done in blue rather than grey and is double- rather than single-breasted. Note the badge to give it a school or club look.

F. Something Different

This suit has a "mod" look which we suppose is why it is described as "something different". The ad copy read, "Something different in boy's styling , a single-breaste, button-3 jacket featuring three patch pockets with flaps that button down, , two side vents, and epaulettes on the shoulders. Shorts, have half elastic back, extended waistband at the front, zip fly and slanting side pockets. The whole suit is cut from a blended Wollen material and is fully lined.
Colour: Dark lovat.
Chest: 25, 26, 27, 28 ins. 1K2017F Suiit £5/7/8 20 wks @ 5/5." This lovat has a brown look. Often lovat has more of a green look. A pattern like this and the flap pockets would have not been used as a school suit.
G. Boy's Knicker Suit

The ad copy read, " Boy's Knicker Suit. 85% Rayon, 15% Nylon, styled in a three-button style with lower flapped pockets and Melton undercollar. The shorts are self-supporting with a zip fly, side pockets and full lining.
Colour: Navy.
Chest: 25, 26, 27, 28 ins. 1K.2005A Suit ............. 89/6 20 wks @ 4/6." Note the use of the term knicker here. This was a term used in the trade for a long time. It is a term that was not commonly used by the general public, at least with this meaning. The boys wearing these suit would have found the term rather funny.

Sizes

The sizes here are indicated in blazer chest sizes. Thecsizes range from 23 to 32. Suit E is offered in the smallest size and suit D in the largest size. Sukts F and G are offered in mid-sizes. We are not sure yet what the age eqivalents are these chest sizes.
