Femmes d'aujourd'hui: Costume Baby (December 1964)

Figure 1.--The suit pictured here was called a "costume baby". Note this suit were very worn by boy 2-4 years old and tends to take the place of the rompers which by the mid-1960s were declining in popularity.

The French sewing magazine Femmes d'aujourd'huis in 1964 offerd a pattern for a "costme baby" for a 2-4 year-old boy. They were made in two different styles.

Femmes d'aujourd'hui

We still have relatively little information on this magazine. The title means Women of Today. We do not know when the magazine began publishing. We do know that they were active in the 1940s-50s. A HBC reader tells us that his mother subscribed to the magazine. She especially liked the patterns that the mazine contained. The pattens were only for sewing garments. For knitting work there were also descriptions in the magazine.

Costume Baby Styles

The suit shown here was commonly referred to as the "costme baby" suit . It was commonly worn by 2-4 year old boys during the 1960s. They were largely replacing rompers that had been popular during the 1950s. were very worn by boy 2-4 years old and tends to take the place of the rompers.

The jacket had a rond collar often trimed with small lace. The most popular colors were white, sky or Vichy (gigham).

There were two styles for the short pants:
Short shorts: One style had very short pants, always made with suspenders which buttoned to the waist.
Elasticized: Another style had shorts with elasticaded legs. It could have buttuning at the crotch. This pattern was very widely distributed and was somewhat more popular than the first one.
