La Redoute in 1980 offered colorful sport or jogging shorts. These are cut short, unlike many of the shorts offered. They are
shown worn with rugby shirts.
(La) Redoute was an important French Department store. One French reader has mentioned the "La Redoute" catalog was well known through out France. The clothing offered is a good indicator of styles that were widely worn in France and by French people in overseas locations. The some styles were also widely worn in Belgium. The store published a Spring-Summer and Fall-Winter catalog. I'm not sure when they began publishing these catalogs. We have pages from these catalogs from 1980, but believe that these catalogs began well before the 1980s. The catalog is thus an important source of information about French fashion trends.
We do not have the ad copy with details on the material, sizes, and other available colors. Presumably both the shirt and shorts were available in several ifferent colors. The shorts have a strongly elasticized waist.
Rugby shirts ar of course an English inspired style. We note the same shirts being very common in the UnitedStates at this time. The sport shorts were very popular Amerucan styles. The shirt and shorts were also worn with sport knesocks looking like ones that might have been worn for football (soccer). This boy could easily have been an American. The only importnt difference is that an American boy probably would have worn tube socks rather than these sport socks.
