French Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothing: 1980


Figure 1.--La Redoute in 1980 offered camp shorts. This was a very popular style in America. We are not sure how popular they were in France. A reader writes, "Its very odd on on this page. The boy's shorts appear to have a fly that is facing the wrong way. It probably isn't a problem with the image, because his shirt is correctly buttoned. Any idea why this is? HBC does not, but perhaps reader can provide an insight here."

French mail order catalogs and clothing advertisements offer a very useful time line on changing fashion trends. French boys in the 1980s commonly wore blazers when they dressed up. One catalog shows a blue blazer and khaki trousers--a rather American look. Boys wear variety of dressy and casual shorts. Dressy shorts might be worn with sweaters. Casual shorts, some with large patch pockets are worn ith sport looking shirts. Sport or jogging shorts were popular in the early 1980s. These were still cut short, but many other shorts were cut much longer. An especially could source of information is La Redoute catalog.

La Redoute in 1980 offered a blue blazer with a make-believe school shield. It is worn with a school tie, button-down shirt and khaki trousers, giving the outfit a rather American look. We do not, however, have details on the material, sizes, or other available colors.

La Redoute in 1980 offered colorful rugby shirts. Rugby has Eglish origins, but these shirts were very popular in America. They are shown worn sport shorts.

Pants

Boys wear variety of dressy and casual shorts. Dressy shorts might be worn with sweaters. Casual shorts, some with large patch pockets are worn with sport looking shirts. Sport or jogging shorts were popular in the early 1980s. These were still cut short, but many other shorts were cut much longer. We note that preppy khaki trousers were also popular.

La Redoute in 1980 offered colorful sport or jogging shorts. These are cut short, unlike many of the shorts offered. They are shown worn with rugby shirts.

Le Redoute camp shorts

La Redoute in 1980 offered what look like camp shorts. This was a popular style of shorts in the United States. American camp shorts were not as long as these French shorts.

Shorts Sets

A French reader describes an "ensemble habillé" for a very young boy. In French an ensemble or outfit "habillé" means "equipped" or dressed with a certain elegance, but in a relaxed not formal wear. The term "tenue de ville" (town suit) has a similar meaning.

Le Redoute shorts set

La Redoute in 1980 offered a light blue "V" neck sleveless sweater with long shorts pants which look to be a wool blend. They were worn with white kneesocks. he outfit looks to be for a younger boy, perhaps 5 or 6 years old.
