American Mail Order Catalogs with Boys Clothings: Younger Boys Suits (1915)

Figure 1.--This is a page of younger boys' suits from the 1915 Sears caralog. Notice that almost all were done with knee pants rather than knickers like the older boys were wearing. Also notavle is the variety of suit styles. This is in part due to the fact that boys still commonly wore suits in the 1910s, they were not limited to just special occassions. Also notice the heaswear associted with them.

Younger boys in the 1910s still cimminly wire suits. They were done in a wide range of styles as yiu cab see here/ We see both juvenile style jackets as well as the stykes older boys wore. Sailor and Nirfolk styling waa popular. Knee pants did not totally disppear as knickers became standard for American boys. We continue to see, however, suits for younger boys commonly done with knee pants rather than knickers. Througout the 1910s and vinto the 1920s we see suits for younger boys being done with knee pants. We see this very clearly in the popular mail order catalogs of the day. The Sears 1915 catalog page here is a good example (figure 1). We are not yet sure about the precise ages here, but we think it was both pre-school and younger primary ages, probably boys about 4-8 years old. We see quite a range of jacket styles, including both sailor suits and regular suit styles. Some of the jackets were clearly jivenile styles. others were done in the same styles as the plder boys. These knee pants suits were almost always worn with long stockings. This was the case for both the younger and older boys. You can see that in the Sears illustrations here. Itbis useful to look at 1910s schoolwear to see how the styles here are actually reflected in the clothes children wore.
