Catalogs and Avertisements: Shirts (United States, 1952)


Figure 1.--Many primary-age boys woree ;ong sleeved "T"-shiets in the Fall for both school and play. They had the advantage that they didn't need to be ironed which must have been a real positive with many mothers.

Boys wore a variety of shirts during 1952. Boys wore short skeeves in the summer and long sleeves un the winter. We note solid colors and prints (tatersalls, and plaids), normally done in plain collars. Cotton "T"-shirts were especially popular for warm-weather summer wear and there were long-sleeved "T"-shirts for the Fall. Both were wirn to school by primary-age boys. Stripes were popular for "T"-shirts. Colorful flannel shirts were popular for schoolwear. Flannel shirs were widely worn in the fall to school.

Best's Pants and Shirts

The Best & Co. catalog in 1952 offered "husky clothes for rough and tumble wear". There were a variety of print shirts as well as oxford cloth blue and white shirts.

Best's Shirts and Shorts

The Best & Co. summer catalog in 1952 offered "Clothes to Keep Him Cool and Comfortable". The items offered were mostly "T"-shirts and shorts. There was also a Eton cord suit.

Field's Long-sleeved "T"-shirt

Many primary-age boys woree long sleeved "T"-shiets in the Fall for both school and play (figure 1). They had the advantage that they didn't need to be ironed which must have been a real positive with many mothers. The Field's ad copy read, "The shirt boys like best ... for all occassions. It's soft and warm and easy to care for ... washes in a jiffy, needs no ironing. Gay stripes in colorfast, fine-rib cotton jersey with double, snug-fit crew neck and cuffs. It comes in assorted multicolir stripes. Sizes 2. 4. 6, 8, 10 and 12. E4304. Postage paid ... 59c."

Chips and Twigs Flannel Shirts

We see Chips and Twigs offring plaid flannel shirts for school wear. This was a vefry coomon garment foe school suring the fall and winter. Most boy would have worn them.
