American Suits and Sports Jackets (1952)

Figure 1.--This Chips and Twigs ad looks like a back to school fall ad. We know it was a 1952 ad, but we don't know the magazinr in which it appeared. The cap, jacket plaid shirt and cord pants would be typical schoolwear in elementary school. The suits and sports jackets would be fall dress up clothes, not schoolwear.

Casual clothes were growing in popularity by 1952. Boys still wore suits, but dess up occasions were becoming less common. Boys increasingly wore casual clothing or perhaps a white short and tie rather thansuits which much more common before World War II. American boys in the early 1950s were increasingly wearing single breasted suits. Black and navy blue suits were the conservitive choice which became a classic style. Grey was also a conservative choice, but much less common thin Britain. Brown was a color widely used fior boys' suits. Sports jackets had become very popular. A popular style for sports jackets were a two-fabric style. Most boys were wearig long pants suits, but boys under 10 years of age might stull wear short pants suits, especially boys from affluent families. Juvenile Eton suits were commonly worn by younger boys.

Best's Suits

The Best & Co. catalog in 1952 offered "Best's Choice Dress-Up Clothes--Cool, Carefully Tailored. The suits here are all single breasted with blazer-type patch pockets. There is one Eton suit without lapels for younger boys, also with blazer-style patch pockets.

Fields Suit and Sports Jacket

Walter Fields in 1952 offered both a two-fabric sports jacket and a salt-and-pepper suit. Both jackets used some non traditional styles. Notice the small lapels on the sports jacket. The suit also has small lapels with a non-traditional cut, At the time large lapels were much more common. Blended fabrics with rayon were becoming increasingly common. These outfits were done in sizes 4-10 years of age

Chips and Twigs: Kord Amaze

We notice a Chips and Twigs magaiune advertisment. Chips and Twigs are brand names of the W.M. Schwarz & Co. The ad copy is a little difficult to read. We do not know whay magazine it apeared in, but we know it was dated 1952, probably a fall issue. We see what looks like a back to school outfit and jacket as well as suits for younger and older boys. The suits are headed Kord. I think that mans that the pants were corfuroy. The jajkets are not cord, but the pants are. The short pants Eton suit was for boys 3-7 years of age. It came with a matching peaked cap which thad refers to as an Eton cap. The long pants suit seems to come in sizes 4-12 years.
