Boys' Historical Clothing: New Pages--March 2021

Figure 1.--The idea that slavery was foundational institution of the United States has no basis in fact. Slavery produced huge profits for a few decades in the first half of the 19th century, but it was in the north that democracy, free labor, and capitalism were the foundational nstitutions of the American nation. Slavery actulaly was a drag on the American economy which is why the South lagged behind the North. It limited the productive capacity of a substantial part of the Soutthern population. It was why the South was the poorer section of the country. Slavery had been a part of civilization since time memorial. What was the foundation on which America was built was the core idea that ordinary citizens could manage their affairs without a monarchy. It was the first time in modern history that this vital Englightenment idea had been put to the test. Thomas Le Clear's painting 'Young America' was a powerful statement of how thoroughly the American experiment in democracy had filtered down to the very youngest. The African-American man located close to the central focus may be the artist's subtle suggestion that while American democracy was more advanced than in any other counttry at the time, it was still very much a work in progress. Notice the detailed depiction of the oak tree. The oak is one of the most loved trees in the world. It's a symbol of strength, morale, resistance, and knowledge. .

Some HBC readers tell us that they would like to be able to access new pages, but do not want to receive E-mails on every new page added to HBC. We have also for several years now experienced problems dealing with AOL. Thus we have created this page for HBC readers. We will list new pages or existing pages to which we have added additional information. We used to maintain a page like this. We know from this experience that we sometimes forget to add a new page, but we will try to remember to do this as much as possible. There will not be a link on our home page so you will want to add this to your favorites/book marks. We plan to only make this page available to readers who support HBC. There may be occasional changes in the URL. Just let us know if you have any question about this HBC feature.

Notice CIH/HBC has just completed a huge migration. You probably noticed the break in service for several days. The new system is more stable, but much more demanding than the old system. A tiny coding error which the old system tolerated can cause a broken link, both pages and images. I am slowly making the correctiions, but as there are 25,000+ pages, it will be some time before I find them all. If you encounter a broken page or image link, feel free to alert me and I will make the needed correction and you can get to the page
