The Delineator Chronology: Child's Coat (September 1880)

Figure 1.-- As was common at the time, the "Dileator" used "costume" to describe the garment rather than a more descriptive term that would help classify the garment. It appeared in the September 1880 issue. We are not entirely sure how to classify this garment. But as explained in the Dileator ad copy, it seems to bea coat. But it seems to be a coat with a destinctive skirt made to be worn with a dress or other skirted garment like the kilt suits which was popular at the time.

This article was on page 134. The illustration for the garment was on page 135. The title is "Child's costume", but the text clearly refers to a boy. As was common at the time, "costume" is used to describe the garment rather than a more descriptive term that would help classify the garment. We are not entirely sure how to classify this garment. But as explained in the Dileator ad copy, it seems to bea coat. But it seems to be a coat with a destinctive skirt made to be worn with a dress or other skirted garment like the kilt suits which was popular at the time. The Delineator text read:

"Figure No. 1--This little man is all equipped for wind or weather and ready for a jaunt of any kind. under the stlish over-garment is worn a dainty dress of tern camel's hair, made in the style of a single-breasted sack slip, with a plaited back-skirt attached to its [short?] center and side-back sections. It has sashes that are fastened under the back edges of large square patch pockets and tie in aouble bow-knot at the back; while the neck is completed with a deep falling collar, and the slleves are finished to represent pretty cuffs. The model to the dress is no. 7133, which is in six sizes for children from one to six years of age, and costs 7d [d meaning British pence], or 15 cents. [Note the prices indicated of course are for the pattern, not the garment.]

The outside garment or coat has a double-breasted, loose front, and aingle fitted back, at whose center and side edges extra fullness is left and turned other in plaits that afford a pretty fullness for that part of the skirt. Straps are sewed to the side seams and are used to support the belt, which passed through them and fastens at the front with a buckle. Little pocket-welts are on the sides of the skirt, abd may conceal pocket-openings. The cape is cut in the usual style, except that it is double brested, one side turning back in a revers [Note: we are not sure why the writer does not just say reverse.] and lapping over the other, which fastens to the fronts with button-holesand buttons, the lower corner of the over lapping also being correspondingly secured under the belt at the opposite side. A deep, round collar and a narrow, standing one surround the neck and finish it stylshly, while the sleeves are completed in cuff form with facings of silk that upon the revers, collar and belt, and along the outer edges of the garment. The coat is formed of English waterproof of a dark wool shade. It was cut by model No. 7187, price 10d or 20 cents. It is in six sizes for children from one to six years of age and again my be seen in two views by referring to page 136.

The cap is made of the coat material, and has a silk band. The crown is supported by four curved side pieces, and the shape is very popular in straw, velvet, felts, and plush .
