Luitpold's Clothing: Kneepant Outfits-Color

Figure 1.-Here we see Luitpold in what looks like a fancy white knee pants suit worn with white stockings abd white shoes. The post card here was unidentified and we are thus not entirely sure who the boy here is.

Prince Luitpold wore a variety of different-colored knee pants suits. We notice both dark and light-colored suits. The dark colored suits look black, but we are not positive about this. The light-colored suits look to be white or cream colored. There is no way to be sure, but they certainly look white. There may have been some pastel colors as well. It is, of course, difficult to tell from these black and white photographs. We have not yet been able to find any colored portraits. There may be some as you would think that a royal family would have a portrait painted. A reader writes, "I do not think that is Prince Luitpold of Bavaria, but his cousin Leopold III of Belgium. (Luitpold is German for Leopold.) See the Belgium Leopold III page. The twwo princes rather looked alike and dressed similarly. I am tempted toagree with our reader, in part because of the bangs, but I will not modify the page until I am more positive. Another reader writes, "Look at this HBRC on Belgian Pribce Charles. I think the boy here may be Prince Charles. Another reader suggests, "If you compare this portrait here with the several we have on HBC of Leopold of Belgium and Liitpold of Bavaria, think it is pretty clear that this is the Belgian prince, not the Bavarian one. Take a look at the photo of Leopold and his younger brother Charles riding a toy elephant. The features are the same. And the white silk stockings are the same also. If this is Prince Leopold of Belgium, and I think it is, then we know both the date and the boy's age. The portrait of Leopold was made in 1913 and Leopold was born in 1901, so in the painting he is 12. I think he is also 12 in this photo, or possibly 13 years. Anyway the date must be either 1913 or 1914, probably the former. He is certainly not any older than 14. "
