European Royalty: Monaco: Prince Andrea

Figure 1.--Prince Andrea was 4 years old when photographed with his sister in 1988. He wears a white middy blouse, long blue short pants, white kneesocks and sandals.

Andrea Casiraghi is the eldest son of Princes Caroline, the daughter of Prince Grace and Prince Ranier. Andrea was dressed in some elegant children's clothes as a little boy, although with generally long shorts. He did not, unlike his uncle Albert, wear short pants suits as an older boy. He adopted the pan-European styles now so common with "T" shirts and jeans. As the eldest grandson of Prince Ranier, he may some day inherit the throne of the principality.

Family

Andrea Casiraghi is the eldest son of Princes Caroline, the daughter of Prince Grace and Prince Ranier. His father is Italian businessman Stefano Casiraghi. Andrea was born about 1984. He has two siblings: Charlotte and Pierre. Princess Caroline remairred after the tragic death of her first husband to Prince Ernst August of Hanover. Andrea reportedly gets along quite well with his step father who bought him a motorcycle for his 13th birthday in 1997. He now has a new half sister, Alexandra, as well as two stepbrothers Ernst August and Christian. Alexandria as Princess Carline's and Prince Ernst August's first child together is the only one of the children which currently has a royal title.

Childhood

Andrea was born about 1984. Andrea was traumitized by the death of his father in a 1990 speedboat racing accident. He was only 6-years old at the time and very close to his father. His hobby is collecting Swatch watches.

Teenager

As a teenager, Andrea has drawn the attention of the European media, much as his mother did when younger. The widely read People magazine has named in one of "People's 50 Most Beautiful People," along with a long list of Hollywood celebrities. Such attention is usually difficult for older people to hanfle, let alone someobe of Andrea's age. As a result all his little picadellos, like smoking, are reported to the public.

Education

Andrea attends boarding school in France, the Lycee Jeanne D'Arc, Saint Aspais. He reportedly enjoys both soccer and track.

Clothes

Andrea was dressed in some elegant children's clothes as a little boy, although with generally long shorts. He did not, unlike his uncle Albert, wear short pants suits as an older boy. He adopted the pan-European styles now so common with "T" shirts and jeans.

Succession

Reports in 1998 suggest that Princess Caroline is promoting Andrea for the Monaco Crown. She has reportedly broached the idea with Prince Ranier. She reportedly told him that Albert's play boy life style is inapropriate for and his refusal to settle down and marry imperiles the continuation of the Grimaldi line. Albert is reportedly not all that concerned about it and apparently feels that Carloine does not understand what pressures would be placed on Andrea.

As the the eldest granchild of Prince Rainier, Andrea is third in line for the throne of Monaco. He isn't normally called a prince because at this time, he is not the heir apparent. He will, however, probably take the throne after the death of his Uncle Prince Albert if his uncle does not have a son. For Andrea to inherit the throne, he would have to be "adopted" by his grandfather Prince Rainier III or his uncle Prince Albert and take the family name of Grimaldi.
