Spanish Royalty: Clothing for Alfonso XIII's Children--Sailor Suirs

Figure 1.--Almost all these boys wear sailor suits. I have, however, only been able to identify some of the children. In this photograph the boys all have white dickies. The source is in Dutch, somewhat complicating my ability to figure out who is who: 1) De troonopvolger (no idea what this means), 2) Prince Jaime, 3) Princess Beatrice, 4) Princess Maria Cchristina, 5) Prince Joan, 6) Prince Alphonsus (son of Don Carlos van Bourbon-Sicilie), 7) Princess Isabella (sister of van den voorgaande), 8) Prince Karel (son of Don Carlos van Bourbon-Sicilie), 9) Princess Dolores, and Princess Marie (sister of Prince Karel).

At a slightly older age they began wearing long pants sailor suits with wide-brimmed sailor hats. They wore both blue and white suits and also blue blouses with white pants. The mixed suits were always worn with long white pants. The suits were worn with short scarves with a ring holder, this fashion is seen in many photographs. In some photographs they are not wearing dickies and in other they wear white dickies. Available images suggest they wore sailor suits through about age 12-13 years. Photographs with other members of the Spanish royal family also commonly wore sailor suits and some of the younger boys did wear short pants sailor suits.
