Prince Carl Gustaf Oscar Fredrik Christian Bernadotte was born (1911). He was the only son of Pribce Carl, the son of King Oscar II. He was given the title of Duke of Östergötland. He was Prince Carl's youngest child. He had three older sisters. His mother was Princess Ingeborg of Denmark. He was sometimes called Prince Carl Jr. Within the family he was known as Mulle--a shortened form of Samuel. This was the name that his mother wanted, but cpurt officials did not consider it proper for a member of the royal family. Prince Carl married Countess Elsa von Rosen (1937). He was required to give up his right of succession, but this was not likely at any rate. His sister Astrid married King Leopold III of Belgium. His royal brother-in-law gave him the title of Prince Bernadotte making him a member of the Belgian nobility. This gave him the status of a count and was a hereditary position. He divorced Elsa (1951). He married again to Ann Margareta Larsson (1922-75) at Danderyd (1954). Prince Carl Bernadotte was involved in the Huseby scandal during the 1950s which was widely publicized. He gained the trust of Florence Stephens, a wealthy elderly heiress who owned a large estate near Växjö in southern Sweden. A variety of involved criminal transactions led to the financial ruin of Stephens. She took Prince Bernadotte to court. He gave the police a full cinfession. In the trial he was acquitted. The court found that he was not considered mentally competent and thus not criminally liable. He left Sweden shortly after his trial. He retired quietyly to Spain. Prince Carl died on July 27, 2003 in Malaga, Spain.
