Schools sometimes specified dress for certain events held during the school year. Here boarding schools were commonly the most likely to specify the dress at various occassions. These events included both events requiring the formal dress uniform. Other evenys might entail the ordinary class room uniform. Some of these events included: fetes, games (sports events) with other schools, prizegiving, religious services, theatrical, holidays, and other presentations, and a variety of other events. Specific requirements ranged from school to school, but the basic convntions were quite common.

Fetes

Schools organize fetes to earn aittle money and to provide a tange of fun ctivities. The boys here have prepared a treasure hunt for the school's summer fete (figure 1). They wear the summer regular seasonal classroom uniform. This is a private schools. We think state schools also had school feres.

Holidays

Schools commonly have holiday celebrations. They provide a break from every day activities which the children enjoy Some are fun events. Others are more educational and provide an opportunity to hoinor the country's traditions and to honor the men and women that have defended the coinyry. They inclue Armistice/Remmberence Day, Christmas, Guy Fawls Fay, Haloween, Queen's Birthday, St. George's Day, and others. Until decolonization (1960s), there were activities to celebrate Empire Day. The activities vary dpending on the school level, school policies, and teacher involvement. This varies somewhat with the schools with religious conection such as the Anglican and Catholic schools, here there are activities asociated with religious celebrations.

Prize Giving

A prize-giving is a school ceremony where prizes are awarded to students people who have produced a very high standard of work or performance. They are awarded at the end of the school years. Normally at a prize giving ceremony, the headmaster gives an inspiring speech before giving out the awards. This includes both academic work and a range of school activites, including sports, debate, and performance arts like art, drama, dance, and drama. The awards can vary from school to school, including, the level, size, type, and phiolophy of the svhool. There are both individiual awards and subject matter awards. There are also named wards where youn get your name added to a plaque, often called a shield. Big schools generallyh hand out certificated. Depending on the school there also be awards for improved achievements. English schools also have house awards. This was based on the public (elite private) boarding school houses. But day schools are also often organized into houses for these competitons.
