English School Events: Holidays

Figure 1.--Empire Day used to be an important celebration. This changed after World War II and with decolonization ceased to be celebrated. Here we see fishrmen, fur trappers, lumberjacks, milk pails, red indians, forests, a World War I soldier. and much more we can't figure out. We are not sure what is in all the baskets, but I don't see any farmers. (Canadian farmers provided grain that helped feed Britain durng both World Wars.) . What cinched the deal as to the country being portrayed here was the moose--that of course meant Canada. And then we saw the maple leaf perhaps maple syrup. The photograph is not dated, but we would guess the 1930s. Put your cursor on the image to see the rest of the tableau.

Schools commonly have holiday celebrations. They provide a break from every day activities which the children enjoy Some are fun events. Others are more educational and provide an opportunity to honor the country's traditions and to honor the men and women that have defended the coinyry. They inclue Armistice/Remmberence Day, Christmas, Guy Fawls Fay, Haloween, Queen's Birthday, St. George's Day, and others. Until decolonization (1960s), there were activities to celebrate Empire Day. The activities varied depending on the school level, affecting both wether and how the holiday was celebrated. Other factors were school policies, and teacher involvement. This varies somewhat with the schools with religious conection such as the Anglican and Catholic schools, here there are activities asociated with religious celebrations.
