French Schools: Malroy École Professionnelle D'Agriculture

Figure 1.--Here we see detail from the school portrait for the 1934-35. There was no school uniform, but the boys mostly look to be wearing suits. One younger boy wears a sailor suit.

We do not yet fully understand just what kind of school this was. We know that it was founded in 1842 and operated through 1992. It appears to have been a provincial secondary school that had a curriculum focused on agriculture. School photographs are available showing schoolwear changes in a rural area of France over many decades.

Type of School

We do not yet fully understand just what kind of school this was. It was a boy's school. It appears to have been a provincial secondary school that had a curriculum focused on agriculture.

Religion

We had first thought this was a state school. The school, however, appears to have been administered by clerics over the year so we assume this means that it was a Catholic school.

Goals

" That translates as, "During its 150 years of existence, l'école d'agriculture of MALROY established a reputation that its renound beyond the limits of the department. As s Mgr TISSERANT writes in the foreword of the book of L'histoire of Malroy at the XXème century "... the formation d'un young person rural, s'il must hold a place in its medium, could not be limited to acquisition of professional capacities. it is necessary, to be [? quelqu'un, for qu'il] becomes a man with the direction full with the word that is capable of interest to all that touches humanity. "

Chronology

We know that it was founded in 1842 and operated through 1992. School photographs are available showing schoolwear changes in a rural area of France over many decades. Unfortunately most of the school portrairs were taken outside apparently during the Winter. Thus the boys are usually bundled up and you often can not tell how they were dressed under their coasts. Even so the school photographic archive does constitute a interesting record of the school. As well as changing French boy's wear fashions over time. One factor to bear in mind is this is an agricultural school, the boys probably do not dress as fashionably as boys might in schools attracting children froim urban communities.

French Fashions

A French reader tells us, "France in the early 20 century was still a largely agricultureal country. Farmer' children until after World War II (1939-45) tended to be dressed differently than childtren in the more fashionally cities. Many farm children for practical raison wore long pants. One could see the same trend among poor children in the cities." One can see these trends in the school here which drew children from farm families. Another factor should be nioted. Poorer children in rural areas did not commonly advance beyond primary school. This is a secondary school and a private fee psaying school. Thus the boys here would tend to come from prosperous farm families. Thus the children wear more fashionabler clothes than what might be found in village state primary schools.

School Web Site

The school has a fascinating web site with historical background and many photographs from the schools long history.
