School Wear at an Individual Primary School: Boys Clothes (1936)

Figure 1.--We note the boys in this 1936 class wearing quite a variety of outfits. The mix of styles is quite interesting. A few boys wear rather mature looking suits. Other boys wear more juvenile styles. Image courtesy of the MD collection.

The boys wear quite a variety of outfits. The mix of styles is quite interesting. A few boys wear rather mature looking suits. Other boys wear more juvenile styles. We also note some rather modern looking outfits while several boys seem to be wearing early 20th century styles. We note a few large white collars looking a bit like Eton collars. At least three of the boys are wearing sailor suits. At least one boy wears lederhosen. Several boys wear different kinds of sweaters, both long sleeve and sleeveless collars. Some boys wear neckties. Most boys wear long sleves, but we see at least one boy wearinbg short sleeves. Many of the children are wearing a badge of some kind--some of them two badges. Hard to make out just what the badge is.

Variety

The boys wear quite a variety of outfits. The mix of styles is quite interesting. Notably these are youngr children. By 1936, more modern style were becoming increasingly standard. This was especially the case for older boys. Some of the older styles, however, were still being worn by the younger boy as is shown in this class.

Age Appropriate Styles

A few boys wear rather mature looking suits. Other boys wear more juvenile styles. Such age appropriate styles were very destinctive in th early 20th century. As the century wore on, children's style began to look more amd more similar to adult clothing. ome of the boys here, for exampl, wear suits not unlike the teacher's suit.

Chronological Trends

The mix of clothing being won in this clss is also interesing chronolgically. We also note some rather modern looking outfits while several boys seem to be wearing early 20th century styles. The mix is fascinating including outfits with large whire Eton-like collars, sailor suits, collar buttoning jackets, and other early 20th century styles. Other boys wear outfits like suits, sweaters, and ties that look very modern to us.

Gaments

We note a few large white collars looking a bit like Eton collars. At least three of the boys are wearing sailor suits. Each of the suits are different, but are all dark suit. They each are styled traditionally, a contrast with early 20th century styles when sailor suits often were done in a wide range of style. At least one boy wears lederhosen. Sweaters were clearly popular garments, even the teacher wears one. Several boys wear different kinds of sweaters, both long sleeve and sleeveless collars. There are also sweaters with collars. Many sweaters seem more like jacketrs. Sone have zippers rather than buttons. Quite a few look like they were knitted by motheror grandmother. Some boys wear neckties. Most boys wear long sleves, but we see at least one boy wearing short sleeves. Scveral boys wear suits. There are also boys with older styled jacker tht button at the collar. One boy has a shirt or jacket buttoning on the shoulder. A few boys just wear shirts.

Badges

Many of the children are wearing a badge of some kind--some of them have two badges. Hard to make out just what the badge is. The designs vary. We do not recognize the symbols involved. They do not appear to be political. We assume they are some kind of awards given by the school for academic achievement. We do not know how common such badges were in German schools. Hopefully our German readers will know something about them.
