This portrait is of an uknowm German primay school taken in 1936. It is a large class and the children look quite young, probably their first or second year in school. We know it was taken in 1936 because the year is written on the back of the photo. The children wear a wide variety of clothing. At least three of the boys are wearing sailor suits. Many of the children are wearing a badge of some kind--some of them two badges. A few of the girls wear pinafores. The portraut was taken 3 years after the NAZIs seized power. We do not notice any NAZI symbols in the classroom. Hitler's portrait is not on the wall, although only one wall is visible.

Primary Class

This portrait is of an uknowm German primay school taken in 1936. It is a large class and the children look quite young, probably their first or second year in school. Notice how all the children have their hands folded on their desk. There are no individual desks, but rather a long rows where the children sit. The whole class seems to be jammed with these long rows of bench tables with a seat on the front. Right behind the teacher seems to be a screen of some sort. There seem to be about 50 children in this class. That is a very large class for younger children just learning to read. I do not understand how the techer could have effectively taught them. I am not sure how common that was in 1936 and what impact, if any, the NAZIs had on class size. There are a lot more boys than girls in this class. I am not sure why that would be be. Boys were more likely to persure advanced studies, but both boys and girls commonly attended promary school in Grmany during the 1930s. We have no idea why there are so few girls in the class. Notice the isle between the girls and the boys. The girls all seem to sit togther. The classroom seems very neat and tidy. The framed pictures on the wall look to be storybook scenes or scenes of childhood and are not political.

Chronology

We know it was taken in 1936 because the year is written on the back of the photo. The portraut was taken 3 years after the NAZIs seized power. We do not notice any NAZI symbols in the classroom. Hitler's portrait is not on the wall, although only one wall is visible. The children wear a wide variety of clothing.

Teacher

This teacher certainly had his hands full with 50 pupils. He seems to have them well disciplined. He wears a single breasted suit with large lapels and a soft collar. Note the pin on his lapel. We wonder if that was a NAZI Party pin. By 1936 the NAZIs had made substantial progress in replacing competent teachers with NAZI loyalists of vaying abilities. Unfortunately we know nothing about this treacher or even where theschool was located.

Clothing

A few boys wear rather mature looking suits. Other boys wear more juvenile styles. We note a few large white collars looking a bit like Eton collars. At least three of the boys are wearing sailor suits. Several boys wear different kinds of sweaters, both long leeve and sleeveless collars. Some boys wear neckties. Most boys wear long sleves, but we see at least one boy wearinbg short sleeves. Many of the children are wearing a badge of some kind--some of them two badges. Hard to make out just what the badge is. A few of the girls wear pinafores. We also note a few girls wearing hair bows.

Hair Styles

The boys wear a wide vaiety of hair style. Only a fee boys have loss cropped hair. Seral boys have full or partial bangs. Other boys hav long enough hair to wear a destinctive part.
