Italian School Beach Visit

Italian school smocks
Figure 1--This photograph was taken in Cucugnano, a coastal village near Rome. This teacher has taken her pupils to the nearby beach for an outing. The boys all wear the smocks required by the school. They only took off their footwear so they could paddle on the beach. The photo is undated, but could have been taken in the 1950s or 60s. An Italian reader tells us, "Really it's a strange situation. I never saw children on the beach wearing their school smocks. Cucugnano is a coastal village, perhaps the teacher suprised the children with a little walk or an excursion to look for sea shells as part of a class project."

The group here seems surprosingly sedate for a beach visit. The children even have their bows on that they wore with smocks. Perhaps they just arrived. A British reader writes, "I have taken school groups to the beach. They have to be very carefully supervised. The smell of the salt water sends themn crazy and they run down to the beach and into the water. Often not bothering to take off their clothes or take their shoes off. The second wave usually stop to take off shoes. The children rush right up to the waters edge and the daring ones started paddling. Others on riocky beaches look for flat stones and send them skipping off the waves. Others wondered off along the beach and explored for ineresting things likes boat moored on jettys. Sandy beaches provide all kinds of diversions. Some like to covered up in sand. The perenial favorite of course is to building sand casstles and other structures. Of course a great time is had by the children. They come away wet, muddy but happy. My guess here the children have just arrived and will look very different when they leave the beach to go home."
