Figure 1.--We notice an image at a small rural school near the French border. It was at Cerlogne. Several of the girls wear smocks that seem to have been made by their mothers. The boys wear sailor suits and other suits. Boys wear both kneepants and long pants. The photograph was taken in 1918, probably while World War I was still in progress. |
Italian children did not wear school uniforms in the 1910s. Boys commonly wore suits to school. The style that buttoned at the collar was common, but we see some boys wearing the newer style with lapels. Some boys wore sailor suits. Most of the suits look to be kneepants which at least during the colder weather were worn with long stockings. Only a few boys wore sandals. Girls wore dresses, often with long stokings. We see some girls wearing smovks, but this seems to have varied from school to school.
Here we see the Ozzano Monferrato, near Turin, in 1913. It looks like a primary school. There is no uniform. The girls wear dresses, mostly with long stockings. Two girls wear white long stockings with strap shoes. The boys mostly wear suits. They look to be mostly kneepants suits worn wuth dark long stockings. We notice in the background, however, at least one boy wearing short pabts and kneesocks. Neither the boys or girkls are wearing smocks.
