Liceo Bianca Villa: Chronology

Figure 1.--Here we see a class at the Liceo Bianca Villa in 1958. The boys look about 9-10 years old. Quite a number of the boys wear smocks, although not as many as in 1957. Note how the teacher has put them in the front row.

We do not know when the school was founded, but believe it operated most of the 20th century. We note school portaits from the school from the 1950s and 60s. The image here shows a class at the school in 1958 (figure 1). The available images shows how schoolwear changed during this period. There seems to have been quite a bit of change in how the boys dressed between 1957-60. We were a little surprised to see so much change in such a relatively short period. In particular we note that smocks which were once commonly worn in just a couple years seem to have completely disappeared at the school. Some of the variations in the class portrait may have been affected by when during the year the photograph was taken.

1957 Class

We do not fully understand the regulations at Italian schools. This school Liceo Bianca Villa clearly had a school smock as shown in the 1957 school portrait. Notice how over half the class wears the same dark blue smocks with white collars. Most wear bows with their smocks. There would not be this kind of uniformity unless the school set guidelines. Yet they were either not required or the regulation was not strictly enforced. Notice how the teacher has only allowed the boys wearing the school smock to sit in the front row. The boys wear mostly long pants. I think that the portrait might have been taken during the winter, although I am not sure about this.

1958 Class

The 1958 portrait here is very similar to the 1957 portrait (figure 1). The major difference is that not quite as many boys are wearing school smocks. The boys look about 9-10 years old. Quite a number of the boys wear smocks, although not as many as in 1957. Note how the teacher has put them in the front row. Most of the boys wear short pants which seems a little unusual as in the 1957 class portrait the boys mostly wear long pants.

1959 Class

Here we see a class portrait in 1959. We note the same teacher as in 1957 and '58. We are not sure, however, if it is the same grade (year) level. The boys are dressed quite a bit differently than un 1957 and '58. Only three boys are wearing school smocks and they are wearing them without white collars and bows. I'm not sure why there was such a sharp difference beyween 1958 and '59. Notice how the teacher has placed the boys wearing smocks right next to him. Many of the boys wear sweaters, mostly plain ones, suggesting that the weather was a little chilly. The wear both short and long pants, mostly with ankle socks.

1960 Class

There were changes in 1960 as well. The smocks are entirely gone. And most of the boys are wearing stripped "T"-shirts rather than collared shirts. Most of the boys wear short pants. We don't see any suspender shorts. We suspect that more boys wear shorts here is probably climate related. The portrait looks to be taken in a warmer time of the year than some of the earlier class portraits.
