Individual Italian Schools: Cabras Village School (Sardinia)

Figure 1.--It was an all boys school. We are not sure if it was a seoarate school or there were classes for the girks in the same school. The teacher has a very loving relationship with the boys. The boys look about 8 years old. Most wear black or dark blue school smocks with large white Peter Pan collars and small bows. It was a kind of school uniform, but several boys do not wear the smocks. Apprently the smocks were apparently strongly encouraged, but not required.

We are not sure if thev boys not wearing smocks wanted to wear them like thev other boys or were glad they did not have to wear them. This class photo was taken in the mid-1950s in Cabras, Sardinia Going barefoot in Sardnia was still comon at the time, although the island had made enormous economic strides. An Italian ciontributorv tells us that a that time, going barefoot was still very common in this fishing village and probably did not carry the same stigma of poverty as it did elsewhere. For these boys, the lack of school smock was probably more a sign of poverty than the lack of shoes. Although many of the boys not wearing smocks are not poorly dressed.
