The First Day ceremony is held in April when school begins which coincides with spring in Japan. Parents commonly photograph the event as a momento of a very important step in the child's life. Some time the schools arange for phoographs. As far as we can tell this always occured in the spriig, alhogh it is not always apparent from the photoaphs which are often taken indoors or at the front door of the home. Unkike some countries, Japan does not normally have seasonal uniforms. We are unsure aboiut Hokaido where the weather can be very cold during the winter. Sweaters like the one the boy here is wearing could be worn in chilly weather (figure 1).
