Seika Elementary School: Uniform

Figure 1.--The summer uniform is more similar for the boys and girls. There is a white fabric hat That can be worn with the brim turned up or down. The boys wear a shirt-sleeved collared shirt with belted navy blue short pants. It is work with white socks and the same black leather shoes worn during the winter. The girls wear a white short-sleeved shirt like the boys, but described as a blouse. (Both have pointed collars.) A summer version of the sailor outfir is not repeated.

The school has a traditional uniform which they proudly point out has not changed since it was first introduced. There is both a summer and winter uniform (November to April). While at school there are light blue smocks. The boys' uniform includes a navyt bluer felt hat with matching jacket, and short pants. The boys' jacket has a large white collar attached which is nor part of the shirt. There are also navy blue or black plain knee socks and black leather shoes. The boys wear long sleeved white socks. The girls' uniform is the same felt hat and a long sleeved sailor jacket which is called a jumper. The kacket is worn with a pleated skirt. The girls wear navy blue knee socks and black leather shoes. A red scarfe is added for a little color. The school was proud of its traditiinal uniform which is unchanged since the school's founding. The summer uniform is more similar. There is a white fabric hat That can be worn with the brim turned up or down. The boys wear a shirt-sleeved collared shirt with belted navy blue short pants. It is work with white socks ans the ane back leatther shoes worn during the winter. The girls wear a white shoirt-sleeved shirtlimke the boiys. (Both have pointed collars.) The girls wear suspender (described as 'fishing') skirts horts and white socks with nblack leather shoes. The socks are described as picket white. We are not sure what that means. We susapect that some of the younger boys may wear suspender shorts. We are not sure if all the girls wear suspender skirts. We notice the children wearing light-blue smockas at school. We are not sure how commin that was or just when they were worn. We notice them being worn both un and outside of the classroom while at school..

Winter Uniform

The boys abd girls wear navy blue wiunter unifiorms shown on the previous page. The boys' winter uniform includes a navy blue felt hat which is the same hat worn by the girls. They come with chin straps wjich are not sjorn being worn. The boys wear matching mavy blue jacket and short pants. The boys' jacket has a large white collar attached which is nor part of the shirt. The jacket is commonly worn in Japan, but the attached white collar is distinvtive. The boys also wear navy blue or black plain knee socks and black leather shoes. The boys wear long sleeved white socks. The girls' uniform is the same felt hat and a long sleeved sailor jacket which is called a jumper. The jacket is worn with a pleated skirt. Sailor school uniform outfits are very common for girls in Japan. The are virtually universal in scondary schools with various differences from school to school. They are also worn at some primary schools, but not nearly so commonly. Quite a number of private schools have opted for them. The girls wear navy blue knee socks and black leather shoes. A red scarfe is added for a little color. Not shown are matrchung navy blue overcoats. We think both the boys and girls wear the same overcoats. The school is proud of its traditiinal uniform which is unchanged since the school's founding.

Summer Uniform

The summer uniform is more similar for the boys and girls, the primary differenhce is short pants for the boys and skirts for the girls (figure 1). There is a white fabric hat that can be worn with the brim turned up or down. It looks like the same basic hat for both the boys and girls. Like the winter hat, there is a chin strap, although the children here are not shown wearing it. The style was a common school wear garment in Japan. The boys wear a short-sleeved collared shirt with navy blue short pants. The shorts are vthe same color as the winter shorts, but we believe that they are a lighter-weight material. The shirts have belt loops. The boy is shown wearing a plain black belt. The boy wears an open collar and the girl a buttoned collar, but this does not seem to be a regulation. The younger boys may wear suspender shorts which were common in Japan. The boys' uniforms is worn with white socks and the same black leather shoes worn during the winter. The girls wear a white short-sleeved shirt like the boys, but described as a blouse. (Both have pointed collars.) A summer version of the sailor outfit is not repeated as is normally the case. The girls wear suspender (described as 'fishing') skirts and white socks with black leather shoes. The socks are described as picket white. We are not sure what 'picket' meant. The boy is shown with ankle socks and the girl with knee socks or tights. While Japsnese schools commonly are strict about the uniforms, often there is flexibility with the hosiery as long as the correct color is worn. We are not sure if all the girls wear the suspender skirts.

School Smocks

We notice the children wearing light-blue smocks at school. We are not sure how common that was or just when they were worn. We notice the students wearing them both in and outside of the classroom. And it was not just for science lab work. We see them being worn in regular classroom sttings as well. But we are not sure how commonly. And we see them being worn in what looks like a playground setting. These smocks seem to be coming popular in Japan. They are not worn to school, but put on once the children arrived at school and worn during the day. Earlier we saw younger children wearing smocks, but in the 2010s we begin to see older primary children wearing them as well. The younger children might wear back-buttoning smocks. The older children seen to be wearing more of a short lab coat style front buttoning smocks.
