Japanese School Uniformal: Seasonal Approaches

Figure 1.--This Japan school had a very destinctive uniform for summer and winter. Note especially the destinctive hat and cap. Other schools did not change the basic uniform.

The approach to seasonality varied at Japanese primary schools. Some schools may no or only minor changes to the basic uniform. The most common is to wear jackets during the colder months. Generally the boys wear short pants whether it is winter or summer. The boys might commonly wear kneesocks rather than ankle socks in the winter. Younger boys might wear tights at some schools. Many of these schools have destinct summer and winter uniforms and a time table as to when the shift takes place, a schedule that often does not precisely follow the vageries of actual weather conditions.

Examples

We have collected some examples of Japanese schools and how they handled seasonality is their school uniform policy.

Example 1

The school seen here had a very destinct school uniform (figure 1). The summer uniform was a wide-brimmed white hat, shoirt-sleeved white shirt that was not tucked in, beige shirt pants, white ankle socks, black leather shoes. The winter uniform had a military cap which I am not sure how to describe. It appears to have some kind of a tassle. The rest of the uniform is the standard Prussian cadet uniform with brass buttons worn with kneesocks and blsck leather shoes.

Example 2

The second examole is another school which had a destinctive summer and winter uniform. The summer uniform was a wide-brimmed white hat, short-sleeved white shirt that was tucked in the waist band. There was a small school logo on tthe shirt. The boy wears belted blue plaid short pants with white ankle socks and black leather shoes. The girl wears the same hat with a white middy blouse, navy blue skirt, white ankle socks, and black strap Mary Jane shoes. The winter uniform is a nsavy blue wide-brimmed hat worn with a navy blue blazer and matching short pants. He wears a white long-sleeves shirt and red neck tie. The outfit is cimpleted with navy blue kneesocks and blck leather shoes.
