Colonial Algerian School Uniform:  Individual Schools--Ecole Kouba (Algiers)

Figure 1.--Here we see a CE2 class at the Ecole Kouba in 1948-49. A few of the boys wear snocks. Note last boy on right front row may be wearing dark long stockings which was rather unusual. Next to him is a boy wearing white (or light) knee socks with strap shoes. One boy looks to be wearing romper pants, but it is difficult to tell. This was not very common in CE2 classes. The boy all the way on right 2nd row is wearing choupette and knee socks. Click on the image to see the rest of the class.

We know nothing about the Ecole Kouba except that it was a primary school located in Algiers during the French colonia era. It appears to be a state school. At first we thought it was a boys school, because some classes were all boys (figure 1). We do not know what the Kouba that the school is named after was. We do have a series of class portraits taken at the school over time providing a good idea of how the children dressed. We are guessing that the school was in a nice section of the city as the children seem to be rather well dressed. We see the boys wear a wide range of clothing giving a good idea of contemprary clothing styles. Several of the boys wore smocks, but they were a minority. Most of the children appear to be French.

The School

We know nothing about the Ecole Kouba except that it was a primary school located in Algiers during the French colonia era. It appears to be a state school. At first we thought it was a boys school, because some classes were all boys (figure 1). We are not sure why some of the classes were sngle gender and others were coed. We do not know what the Kouba that the school is named after was.

Chronology

We do have a series of class portraits taken at the school over time providing a good idea of how the children dressed. We have found photographs for the 1940s and 50s. This is a relatively short period so we see only limited fashion changes. France was occupied by the Germans in 1940, but they never occupied Algeria. Relatively little war damage occurred during the War. All of the images we see seem to show rather prosperous looking children. The Algerian War escalated during the 1950s, but most of the fighting was in the countryside, not in Algiers. As a result of the Algerian War, the Frence were forced to leave Algeria in 1961 and the country became independent. All of the available photographs are from the French colonial period. We do not know what happened to the school after independence.

Location

We are guessing that the school was in a nice section of the city as the children seem to be rather well dressed.

Garments

We see the boys wear a wide range of clothing giving a good idea of contemprary clothing styles. Several of the boys wore smocks, but they were a minority. The outfits the children wore varied slightly depending on the age or class level.

Nationality

Most of the children appear to be French. We are not sure what the school regulatuions were in the 19th century when Algeria was seized by France. Bu the 20th century when these class portraits were taken, Algerian and French children were fully integrated. There was difference in the pupil make up from school to school as a result of residential patterns.
