Ecole Kouba: Chronology

Figure 1.--Here we see the CE1 class in 1953-53. Note the sign which reads Vieux Kouba. I'm not sure why it says Vieux rather than Ecole. Hopefully our French readrers will know. This was a coed class. At least seven boys wear smocks, some with white sandals. The other boys wear shirts and short pants. Click on the image to see the rest of the class.

We do have a series of class portraits taken at the school over time providing a good idea of how the children dressed. We have found photographs for the 1940s and 50s. This is a relatively short period so we see only limited fashion changes. France was occupied by the Germans in 1940, but they never occupied Algeria. Relatively little damage occurred during the War. All of the images we see seem to show rather prosperous looking children. The Algerian War escalated during the 1950s, but most of the fighting was in the countryside, not in Algiers. As a result of the Algerian War, the Frence were forced to leave Algeria in 1961 and the country became independent. All of the available photographs are from the French colonial period. We do not know what happened to the school after independence.

The 1940s

France was occupied by the Germans during World War II in 1940, but they never occupied Algeria. I'm not sure how the War and German occupation of France affected the algerian economy. Relatively little damage occurred during the World War II. All of the images we see seem to show rather prosperous looking children. A CE2 class at the Ecole Kouba in 1948-49 shows a few boys wearing snocks. Most boys wore short pants. Some boys wore kneesocks, but ankle socks were more common. Boys wore both shoes and sandals, We note one boy wearing a choupette hair cut. We note single gendr classes in the 1940s.

The 1950s

The Algerian War escalated during the 1950s, but most of the fighting was in the countryside, not in Algiers. We note coed classes in the 1950s. Here we see a coed CE-1 class in 1953-54 (figure 1). At least seven boys wear smocks, some with white sandals. The other boys wear shirts and short pants.

The 1960s

As a result of the Algerian War, the Frence were forced to leave Algeria in 1961 and the country became independent. All of the available photographs are from the French colonial period. We do not know what happened to the school after independence.
