Russian Kindergartens: Life Skill Activities

Figure 1.--Here is a poster prepared to help Kindergarten boys get dressed. There was a set for both boys and girls as well as Spring and Winter. This is the boy's coming to school in the winter page. They were large posters published in 2009. The set is named "Ya umeju sam" ("I can do it myself"). I think these posters were created for using at home and at Kindergarden to remind the child how to dress properly and in the same time to learn numbers from 1 to 8. There is a little problem with the process. A Russian reader tells us that the boy would not have put on his tights or even his long pants over his short pants, yet the short pants shoehow got to school. Put your cursor on the image to see the reverse process. Our Russian reader tells us that there more likely approsches. 'First variant - to put off short pants and socks and then put on tights and long pants. But this would be really slow - much more often tights were put under the short pants - so to be ready for a walk the boy put off shorts only and then put long pants over tights. It was quick, easy for a kid and comfortable for the teacher.'

A variety of life skill activities are taught in Kindegarten. The children zre often taught safty, especially traffic safty as most of the children walk to school. Dressing is a skill the children work on it. And during the winter as the children arrive all bundled up, this can be very involved. Russia can of course be quite cold in the winter, so the littkle ones have to be very warmly dressed. And all these cold weather garments have to be put back on when they head back home so the children are kept nice and warm. Mother is available at home in the morning, but in the afternoon the teacher has to get the children dressed. Some of these garments are a little difficult for the children to habndle all by themselves. Any putting on garments tends to be more difficult than taking them off. Thus a Kindergarten teacher swith a room full of little onnes needs to help the children to develop these skills. Here we see a poster to help the boys in the process (figure 1). There are also a range of health skills that the teacher worls on like eating healthy foods, washing hands, brushing teeth, combing hair, and other matters.
