Russian Kindergartens: Activities

Figure 1.-- The teacher is this kindergarten clas has gotten the children interested in gardening. Public schools in Russia no longer have uniformns. Although many kindergarten boys wear short pants, they are not required. In southern regions of Russia, younger boys wear short pants to school in early autumn or late spring because long trousers are too hot. As for these kindergarten boys, the photograph was taken in early autumn or late spring. At this time you can easy see boys dressed various, including long pants, shorts and tights or just short pants in the same class.

Most kindergarden activities of course take place in the classroom and we notice a wide range of activities taking place there. To the untrained eye, it may look like the children are just playing, but actually much more than plat is taking place. The classroon environment is less formal than that for older children. Kindergarteners are just learning about school and how to behave in class. There are both academic and play activities, but a great deal of learning takes place even in the play activities. The academic activities are to prepare the children for reading and writing which will begin in earnest in the first grade. There are also numeric skills to be taught. Skilled teachers can add all sorts of interesting activities to excite the imaninations of these children who are enormously curious. Here a teacher has gotten the children interested in gardening (figure 1). We were not entirely sure when this photograph was taken. Not all the activities kindergareners engage in are classroon activities. On the previous page we see the children from a modern Russian kindergarden involved in a school pagent of some kind (figure 1). It looks to be one of the "Seasons celebration", they are traditional for kindergartens. Red apples in a basket is one of Autumn symbols (for Russia), so may be it is "Welcome, Autumn" celebration. Kindergarden children commonly wore long stockings and modern children often wear tights. Short pants and white tights are considered a dressy outfit.

Play

There are a range of play activities that the children enjoy. To the untrained eye, it may look like the children are just playing, but actually much more than plat is taking place. There is a lot of play activities of course. Abd some iof it is great fun. A great deal of learning takes place even in the play activities.

Life Skill Activities

A variety of life skill activities are taught in Kindegarten. The children zre often taught safty, especially traffic safty as most of the children walk to school. Dressing is a skill the children work on it. And during the winter as the children arrive all bundled up, this can be very involved. Russia can of course be quite cold in the winter, so the littkle ones have to be very warmly dressed. And all these cold weather garments have to be put back on when they head back home so the children are kept nice and warm. Mother is available at home in the morning, but in the afternoon the teacher has to get the children dressed. Some of these garments are a little difficult for the children to habndle all by themselves. Any putting on garments tends to be more difficult than taking them off. Thus a Kindergarten teacher swith a room full of little onnes needs to help the children to develop these skills. There are also a rabnge of health skills that the teacher worls on like eating healthy foods, washing hands, brushing teeth, combing hair, and other matters.

Academics

The academic activities are to prepare the children for reading and writing which will begin in earnest in the first grade. There are also numeric skills to be taught.

Class Facilities

Skilled teachers can add all sorts of interesting activities to excite the imaginations of these children who are enormously curious. Here a teacher has gotten the children interested in gardening (figure 1). Notice all the plabnts in the background. We were not entirely sure when this photograph was taken. Often the teachers had the children care for gold fish are small animals. Of course the children become very attached to the animals and are very interested in caring for them, activities like feeding them or cleaning out their cages.

Special Events

Not all the activities kindergareners engage in are classroon activities. On the previous page we see the children from a modern Russian kindergarden involved in a school pagent of some kind.
