Modern Russian Kadet Schools: Uniforms

Figure 1.--This boy was a cadet at a Russian military academy, we think about 2000. He looks a bit like President Putin. Click on the image to see another cadet. We are not sure what "CBY" on the epaulettes mean. Note other uniforms have Roman numbers on the epaulettes.

Kadets have a military-style school uniform. They have three different sets of uniform: casual, parade, and field. The uniforms are based on Russian Army officer styles. Field uniform is made of military camouflage cloth. The kadets not only wear their uniform at school, but when they visit theaters, museums, exhibitions and other official events. The Cadet schools use the same uniform as it is based on Russian Army styles. Each kadet school has its own Charter where all requirements to the uniform are written. But all those schools take Russian army style as a base and differ only in small details, for example, color of shoulder straps and so on. A reader writes, "I saw several Kadet travelling on the Metro with their parents. They were either going to a function or returning home after lessons. I often saw them early morning on the metro about 9 am. I also came across groups visiting Museums. They were well disciplined and showed much interest in the museum. I chatted to some groups but often the English was not good enough to understand my questions. They were very interested in talking to an over seas visitor." The Kadets on the previous page wear a blue uniform with Roman numbers on their eapaulettes. Here we see a virutally identical uniform done in olive green (figure 1). The only other difference we note are letters on the epaulettes rather than Roman numbers.
