Russian Kadet Schools: Modern Russia

Figure 1.--Here is a group of Moscow Kadets on a field trip. They were looking at the military equipment in Victory Park. It is not too apparent from the photograph, but there are girls in the group.

After the fall of Communism and disolution of the Soviet Union (1991). Military training in the schools seems to have fallen out of favor. We are not sure what happened to the Kadet schools. They may have been closed are just deemphasized. President Putin has shifted state policies and reemphasized the military, including military training. The Kadet schools were reopned or expanded. As we understand it, they are not part of the local public school system. They would be something like a charter school in the United States. Students have to apply to enter the schools and each school sets its own admission standards. Both kadet schools and military schools ave been opend to girls as well. There are only a few girls at the schools. Many parents don't think the schools are suitable for girls and most girls are not particularly interested in the military. Some girls, however, are interested. The schools are similar to military schools in the United states, except they are not boarding schools. Some of the children are thinking about military careers. Some parents chose the kadet schools for the children because of the discipline involved. These are not private schools, but schools financed by the state. The Kadet corps is a special type of secondary school, where boys get basic military education. This is not the only type of military school in Russia. There are also the Suvorov Military Schools and Nakhimov Naval Schools. Kadets have a military-style school uniform. They have three different sets of uniform: casual, parade, and field. The uniforms are based on Russian Army officer styles. Field uniform is made of military camouflage cloth.

Fall of Communism

After the fall of Communism and disolution of the Soviet Union (1991). Military training in the schools seems to have fallen out of favor. The experiebnce in Afghanistan and a relatively free press were part of the reason for this popular feeling. We are not sure what happened to the Kadet schools. They may have been closed are just deemphasized.

President Putin

President Putin has shifted state policies and reemphasized the military, including military training. The Kadet schools were reopned or expanded.

Kadet Schools

Military Schools

This is not the only type of military school in Russia. There are also the Suvorov Military Schools and Nakhimov Naval Schools.

Kadet Uniforms

Kadets have a military-style school uniform. They have three different sets of uniform: casual, parade, and field. The uniforms are based on Russian Army officer styles. Field uniform is made of military camouflage cloth. The kadets not only wear their uniform at school, but when they visit theaters, museums, exhibitions and other official events. The Cadet schools use the same uniform as it is based on Russian Army styles. Each kadet school has its own Charter where all requirements to the uniform are written. But all those schools take Russian army style as a base and differ only in small details, for example, color of shoulder straps and so on. A reader writes, "I saw several Kadet travelling on the Metro with their parents. They were either going to a function or returning home after lessons. I often saw them early morning on the metro about 9 am. I also came across groups visiting Museums. They were well disciplined and showed much interest in the museum. I chatted to some groups but often the English was not good enough to understand my questions. They were very interested in talking to an over seas visitor." The Kadets here wear a blue uniform with Roman numbers on their eapaulettes. We have seen a virutally identical uniform done in olive green. The only other difference we note are letters on the epaulettes rather than Roman numbers. .
