South African School Garments: Blazers

South African school blazers
Figure 1.--This boy at a private South African preparatory school wears a blue blazer. The blazer looks very English, but note the khaki shirt and shorts that he is wearing with it.

The school blazer is another school uniform ite essentially adopted in South Africa. Many South African schools have English styled school blazers. As far as we know, the South African blazers are identical with the English blazers. Private schools and many state schools have blazers, although they were not always worn at primary schools. They were much more common at secondary schools. The blazers in recent years appear to be somewhat less common. We do not have a lot of information about South African blazers yet. We know as in England that they came in several different colors. Most boys luke the one here wear solid-colored blazers (figure 1). we also note some striped blazers. It is interesting that even after the Afrikanners gained dominance over the English in outh Africa, the retained the basically English school system. The blazer and other elements of Englisg school uniform are the outward manifestation of this. The one significant difference we have noted between South African and English school blazers is that several schools in South africa wore them with khaki shorts. This was almopst never seen in England where blazers fir school were normally wirn with grey or black shorr or long trousers.

Many South African schools have English styled school blazers. As far as we know, the South African blazers are identical with the English blazers. Private schools and many state schools have blazers, although they were not always worn at primary schools. They were much more common at secondary schools. Gender

We have noted both boys abd girls wearing blazers as part of their school uniform. I'm not sure if the blazers are made differently for boys and girls.

Colored Blazers

We know as in England that they came in several different colors. Most boys luke the one here wear solid-colored blazers (figure 1). Blazers used to be more colorful in Englands. Now blazers are very commonly black, especially in the state schools. There are several different color combinations. We notice several schools with blue and maroon blazers.

Stripped Blazers

we also note some striped blazers. We do not have a lot of information about South African blazers yet. we are not sure how common the stripped blazer off, but we have noted several schools which have them.

Khaki Shorts

The one significant difference we have noted between South African and English school blazers is that several schools in South Africa wore them with khaki shorts. Notice the boy here. He also has a khaki shirt, wgich was almost never seem in England. This was almopst never seen in England where blazers for school were normally worn with grey or black short or long trousers.

Prefects

Generally speaking all the boys at a school wear the same color blazers. Some times school officers wear destinctive uniform outfits. Often prefects have badges or destinctive ties. We note one school wear the head boy wears a destinctive blazer. The school blazer is maroon, but the head boy wears a blue blazer. At some schools in other countries the prefects wore destinctive trim of some sort on their blazers. We do not know if this was also done in South Africa.
