Scottish School Uniform: Grenock High School

Figure 1.--Rge Form 1B boys at Grenock High School all wear blazers or suit jackets, but there are many different styles. The boys in this junior form all wear shorts.

HBC at this time has little information about Greenock High School or indeed Scottish high schools in general. In England during the 1950s there were selective grammar schools for the academically talented boys and secondary modern schools for the less capable boys. HBC is unsure if Scotland had the same selective system and how a high school fitted into it. While we do not at this time fully understand the academic program, we do know a little about the uniform. The uniform at Grennock high school in the 1950s looks to have been similar to that of Greenock Academy, although the school appaers to have permitted more individual choice.

Scottish Education

HBC at this time has little information about Greenock High School or indeed Scottish high schools in general. In England during the 1950s there were selective grammar schools for the academically talented boys and secondary modern schools for the less capable boys. HBC is unsure if Scotland had the same selective system and how a high school fitted into it. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, but had its on educational system. There were significant differences between the English and Scottish education system. HBC at this time, however, does not fully unerstand those differences.

Chronology

This school portrait was taken in 1950.

Figure 2.--Many of the boys wear dark blazers, but there are also boys wearing a variety of other suit coats. One boy wears a casual jacket..

Form

This portrait was Form 1B. Often British schools streame the boys. So this may have been the second highest class of boys during their first year. The boys would have been 11 or 12 years of age.

Uniform

While we do not at this time fully understand the academic program, we do know a little about the uniform. The uniform at Grennock high school in the 1950s looks to have been similar to that of Greenock Academy, although the school appaers to have permitted more individual choice.

Caps

HBC has no information about caps. Many Scottish schools in 1950 still required boys to wear caps--especially the junior boys.

Blazers

Presumably there was a school blazer. The boys, however, wear a wide range of jackets and blazers. Apparently there was no required blazer. This may have been due to the difficult econmoic conditions in Britain after Eorld War II. Perhaps many parents couldn't aford the school blazer or perhaps they were not even available. Several boys wear school badges on their blazers. Some of the badges appear differeny, although it is difficult to tell with the available image.

Ties

Most boys wear ties. A number of boys wear open collare shirts as was often the case in Scottish schools.

Figure 3.--.Notice the one boys' bright sweater and the wide variety of socks thaat the boys wear.

Shirts

All of the boys appear to be wearing white shirts. I do not see any gray schools.

Jumpers

The portrait shows only a few jumpers. Most of the boys have buttoned up their coats. The jumpers are quite widely varied. Some have bol patterns. There do not seem to be any school-type jumpers--plain grey "V" neck sweaters with colored trim.

Pants

All of the boys wear short trousers. Shorts were still common in the 1950s, but the faact that every boy wears shorts suggests that it was a school rule.

Kneesocks

Most of the boys appear to be wearing kneesocks. Some may be wearing anklesocks, but it could be that that their kneesocks have just fallen down like Our William. The boys while mostly wearing kneesocks, virtually appear to be wearing different kinds of kneesockls. Some are plain grey socks and other are school socks. They appear, however, to be for different schools.

Shoes

All the boys look to be wear black leather shoes, presumably mostly lace ups.
