Swedish School Activities: Field Trips

Figure 1.-- Here we see a school group from Kyrkesund, a Swedish costal village, about 70 km north of Goteborg. The photo was taken in 1919 during a school trip. It looks like they are headed to a pleasant side outside of town to have a picnic. We are not sure what the flags were all about.

We are not sure when school field trips first became popular in Sweden. We note schools taking thee trips in the early 20th century. We are not sre, however, wgat the first fiekld trips were. We suspect that they began as hikes out into te country to have a picnic. The ininitial trips were limited by the cost of transport abnd thus had to be mostly limited to place here the children could walk. The arrival of school busses greatly expanded the poptential for field trips. Here we see a school group from Kyrkesund, a Swedish costal village, about 70 km north of Goteborg. The photo was taken in 1919 during a school trip. It looks like they are headed to a pleasant side outside of town to have a picnic. We are not sure what the flags were all about. We can see that the children didn’t wear any uniform. The photograph shows also an element that today could seem strange, but it is attested by the sources in Europe during 19th and early 20th century. When the people were in a public place in open air, the hat was regarded as a very important garment, more important than the footwear. This is clearly notable for adults, but often also for children as well.
